Tesla has commenced the rollout of Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta v12 to customers, marking another significant update, according to CEO Elon Musk.
However, caution is urged when using FSD Beta, as always.
FSD Beta v12 has been eagerly awaited as one of the most anticipated updates to Tesla’s controversial ADAS level 2 system, with hopes that it will eventually progress to level 4 or even 5.
The v12 software update from Tesla introduces what Musk has termed “end-to-end neural nets”. The key difference from previous FSD updates is that the vehicle’s controls are now handled by neural networks rather than traditional coding by programmers.
This update is expected to bring about substantial improvements. Musk has once again asserted, as he has with many FSD Beta updates in the past, that it is “mind-blowing”.
Initially slated for release last year, v12 was delayed. Tesla began rolling out the update in January but only to a select few customers.
The wide release was postponed multiple times, with several new versions of the update being made available only to Tesla employees and a small number of customers.
That is, until now. Numerous Tesla FSD owners are now reporting the receipt of a new software update (2023.44.30.x), which includes FSD Beta v12.3.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Tesla had issued the new version 12.3 update to its employees. It seems that Tesla wasted no time in deciding to extend the update to the broader fleet of Tesla FSD owners.
Despite Musk’s statement last year that v12 would not be Beta, the new update is still labelled as “Beta” by Tesla.
As always, it’s important to remember that Full Self-Driving (FSD) Beta, despite its name, does not equate to truly “self-driving”. It remains a level 2 driver assist system, requiring the driver to maintain hands on the steering wheel and be prepared to take control at all times.
