There’s been some serious drama over at AT&T. Over the weekend, they dropped a bombshell: the data of a whopping 73 million customers got into the wrong hands. Yikes!
According to AT&T, some sneaky hackers managed to get their hands on all sorts of personal info, like social security numbers, email addresses, and phone numbers. Scary stuff, right?
Now, here’s the thing: it’s not totally clear how the hackers got in. AT&T isn’t sure if it was their own systems or one of their vendors that got hit. Either way, it’s a major mess.
The good news is that AT&T is on it. They’ve reset the passcodes for around 7.6 million current customers as a precaution. Passcodes are like extra security codes you use alongside your password. Clever, huh?
But get this—most of the people affected aren’t even current customers. Around 65.4 million of them used to be with AT&T. Phew!
AT&T is trying to make things right, though. They’re offering free identity theft and credit monitoring services to those who might’ve been affected. Nice one, AT&T!
Oh, and here’s a twist: it seems like this data breach might’ve been going on for a while. Back in 2021, a hacker tried to sell off the same kind of data for a big ol’ sum. And just recently, another hacker leaked it online for free. Talk about déjà vu!
So, if you’re an AT&T customer, keep an eye on your accounts and credit reports. And maybe change those passwords while you’re at it.
